TRAVIS COUNTY Safety Specialist (Pilot Program) in AUSTIN, Texas

Performs professional safety management duties and responsibilities, reviews of workers compensation injuries, reviews of the return to work program/employees, and safety training. Assists with safety statistical reporting and trend analysis, education and training, and awareness through research and observations. Provides assistance with the administration of safety programs at department level. Follows standard practices and procedure in analyzing safety situations. Develops safety procedures for Facilities Management Department (FMD) employees based on OSHA and other regulatory entities. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a job classification within the Human Resources job family. It is an entry level Safety Specialist position. Duties and Responsibilities Maintains a comprehensive database for utilizing safety assessment tools, reviews of financial reports and on-site inspections/observations. Assists management with the development of job-related policies and procedures. Updates and revises existing policies and procedure, as required. Develops FMD departmental safety manual. Provides technical assistance regarding safety issues and provides information, as required. Assists with the development of safety training for FMD employees, (forklift safety, office safety, lifting safety, CPR and First-aid, vehicle safety) along with other safety issues and trends. In addition, training related to safety around mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment. Provides safety training to the FMD Department workforce. Develops training materials and handouts. Conducts FMD safety meetings and safety training. Minimum Requirements Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Safety Engineering, or directly related field AND two (2) years of directly related demonstrated experience; OR, Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job. Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements: Valid Texas Driver's License. Preferred: Bilingual in English and Spanish Certified Safety Professional Work Environment & Other Information Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry 50 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting to perform the essential functions.
